Nylon, Resin or Metal Zipper? A Practical Guide for Apparel and Bags

How the three main zipper types differ in look, flexibility, durability and cost - and which one to choose.

Zippers are often the first thing a customer touches. The right zipper type depends on the product, the look you want and how much stress the closure will take.

Nylon coil zippers

Nylon zippers use a continuous coil of polyester or nylon. They are flexible, lightweight and smooth, can follow curves and are the most economical option. They suit jackets, sportswear, dresses, pouches and most bags. Sizes range from #3 (fine) to #10 (heavy duty).

Resin (moulded plastic) zippers

Resin zippers have individual plastic teeth moulded onto the tape. They are strong, resistant to corrosion and available in vivid colours, which makes them popular for outerwear, children's wear, sports bags and outdoor gear.

Metal zippers

Metal zippers use brass, copper, aluminium or nickel teeth. They are the most durable and give a classic, premium look for jeans, leather jackets, workwear and handbags. Teeth can be polished, antiqued or coated.

Other choices to specify

  • Open-end or closed-end – jackets need open-end; bags and pockets use closed-end.
  • One-way or two-way – two-way sliders are common on luggage and long coats.
  • Tape colour and finish – match to your fabric or use reflective and printed tapes.
  • Puller – a custom zipper pull is an easy way to add your brand.
