The base material of a buckle, hook or ring decides its strength, weight, corrosion resistance and which finishes are possible. Use this guide as a starting point — our engineers will confirm the best option for your design.
Stainless steel
Stainless steel (typically 201 or 304) offers excellent corrosion resistance and high strength. It is the best choice for pet collars and leashes, marine and outdoor gear, and any product that is exposed to water or sweat.
- Pros: rust resistant, very strong, long life
- Consider: harder to form into complex shapes; higher tooling cost
Brass and copper
Brass gives a premium weight and warm colour, and is an excellent base for polishing and plating. It is widely used for luxury handbag hardware and metal zipper teeth.
- Pros: premium feel, excellent plating quality
- Consider: heavier and more expensive than zinc alloy
Zinc alloy
Zinc alloy is die-cast, which makes it ideal for complex 3D shapes, sharp logos and decorative details at an efficient cost. It is the most common material for fashion and bag hardware.
- Pros: design freedom, crisp logos, cost efficient
- Consider: should be plated or coated for corrosion protection
Aluminium
Aluminium is very light and strong for its weight, and can be anodised in many colours. It suits travel, sports and outdoor products where every gram counts.
Plastic (POM, nylon, resin)
Engineering plastics are lightweight, quiet and corrosion free. They are used for side release buckles, ladder locks, tri-glides, cord ends and resin zipper teeth, and can be coloured throughout.
Quick recommendation
| If your product is… | We usually recommend |
|---|---|
| Pet collar or leash | Stainless steel or plated zinc alloy hooks; POM buckles |
| Luxury handbag | Zinc alloy or brass with premium plating |
| Backpack / tactical gear | POM / nylon buckles, aluminium or steel hooks |
| Garment or swimwear | Nylon / resin zippers, plastic or coated metal adjusters |
